Author Glen Klinkhart contacted Launch The Book this spring because he wrote a wonderful book — a personal memoir/true-crime novel entitled Finding Bethany — and is in the process of finding the right agent and publisher. An award-winning self-published author as well as a dad, speaker, CEO, homicide detective, hacker and friend, Glen wears many hats and needed a site that could organize his various activities and help him achieve multiple goals on the web.
The “Books” section is something we’re quite proud of as it is entirely scalable — he is able to add new books (we’re sure hoping he’ll write more!) and their related quotes/reviews, “buy links” that automatically generate seller logos, social sharing and “add to GoodReads” functions, and the ability to add sub pages for excerpts, press materials and more.
Because agents, publishers and readers are not the only audiences for an author, there is an area for the press as well — with a bio, media clips, trailers, downloadable artwork and author photos.
Another primary goal of the site is to allow people to find out about his speaking engagements so this is featured in the top level of the site architecture and is designed for him to add media and to provide clear paths to action.
To build his author platform, Glen took his large following on Facebook and migrated to a Facebook “page” rather than a profile and will now use his blog to “house” all of his writings and coordinate that with his Facebook postings. A busy guy, he’s able to write content when he has time and then schedule when they will be published. A Facebook engagement widget is available on every page of the site as a global element, as a primary way for readers to connect.
Probably the coolest feature of all is that this site is entirely responsive. The experience is different from desktop, tablet and mobile versions. The layout shifts and the navigation functions differently to maximize the experience for the user depending on the device used. (If you want to get a sense of how this works, open up the site on your desktop and grab the right corner of the browser and drag it to the left — you’ll see how the site “responds” as the viewport width changes.
We wish Glen all the best and look forward to seeing Finding Bethany on the bookshelves. Here’s a short excerpt and the trailer, but to read more, check out GlenKlinkhart.com. *Raise a glass — clink!*
Finding Bethany, a behind-the-scenes true crime memoir of murder and justice in the Last Frontier of Alaska. Finding Bethany is the true story of how, as a young boy, Glen was unable to save his sister from a heinous sexual homicide, and how he began his journey as a police officer to find the lost, the missing, and to bring those who would do evil upon others to justice. His career as a homicide detective takes the reader along as he travels from the brink of exhaustion and obsession and into the dark and evil world of sociopathic killers, and those who would do anything to help them.
Unlike other true-crime books written from a third person perspective, Finding Bethany details what real life homicide investigations are like, from his unique perspective as a victim and as a reluctant hero. The reader will experience the bizarre twists and turns down dark paths which result in macabre dead ends, and unexpected miracles found within the darkest of circumstances. His cases include the stories of people who were willing to give of themselves for someone they often didn’t even know. Finding Bethany is also about two brothers – one a sociopath, the other a good man whose own love for his evil brother had been exploited his entire life.
